Classroom Discussion: Benefits for Students and Teachers

Truth: I don’t just use classroom discussion sometimes; I use it almost all the time. If we are studying a work of literature, the students are discussing.  I use the Harkness discussion method, which means that the students talk while I observe.

Also inspiring my post today is the truth that I love charts. I find them emotionally satisfying.

As a result of the two aforementioned truths, I have created a chart entitled “Why using classroom discussion as the main teaching strategy is beneficial for both my students and for me.”  I should probably work on my title.

Benefits Chart

Do any of the rest of you use Harkness discussion or another student-centered discussion method?  What other benefits do you find to be true?  What else should I add to my chart?

Have a great week!
